Can a Warm Homes loan help fund your upgrade?

Looking at a heat pump, solar panels or a battery for your home? Find out in about two minutes what a government-supported Warm Homes loan can pay for, which grants could cover part of the cost, and what to do next.

We’re not a lender, so we can’t approve a loan. But we can tell you where you stand and who to talk to next.

Here’s how it works

  1. You tell us your plans

Six quick questions about your home and what you’d like to install.

  2. We check the official rules

We match your answers against the government’s Warm Homes Loan Scheme rules.

  3. You see where you stand

What a loan can cover, which grants could help, and what to do next.

It’s free, it isn’t a credit check, and we’re not a lender.

Three questions everyone asks

Most of the confusion comes down to these three. Here are the short answers, and the long ones are a click away.

What can a Warm Homes loan pay for?

Solar panels, home batteries, air-to-water heat pumps and ground source heat pumps, plus the work needed to fit them. It won’t cover insulation, a chargepoint on its own, or air-to-air heat pumps (yet). See what’s in and out

Can I use a grant as well?

Often, if you’re getting a heat pump. In England and Wales, the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) usually takes £7,500 off the cost (£9,000 until March 2027 for some homes off the gas grid), and the loan can cover the rest. In Scotland, if you own the home and live in it, it’s the Home Energy Scotland grant instead. See how grants fit in

Do I need a certified installer?

Yes. You’ll need an installer certified by the Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) for that technology. If you apply to a lender directly, it will want their quote with your application. See what the quote must show

What’s covered, and what isn’t

Can be funded

  • Solar panelsup to £15,000
  • Home batteryup to £15,000
  • Air-to-water heat pumpup to £20,000
  • Ground or water source heat pumpup to £35,000

The most the scheme supports for each upgrade. For heat pumps, that’s compared with the cost before any Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant comes off.

Not funded

  • Air-to-air heat pump
  • Insulation only
  • Electric car chargepoint on its own

A lender might still offer you an ordinary loan for these, on its usual terms.

Letting a property?

Private Rented Sector (PRS) landlords can borrow too, as individuals rather than through a company. If you’re trying to work out what the Minimum Energy Efficiency Standards (MEES) and the £10,000 cost cap mean for your rental, that’s a different question, and we’ve built a separate tool for it: MEES Path.
